Public transport is the backbone of Stockholm's transport system. No other transport mode can move so many people in such a small space, which makes it one of the most sustainable ways to travel. Public transport in Stockholm includes Metro trains, commuter trains, trams and light railways as well as buses and ferries. As a result, Stockholm residents have better access to public transport than in most other cities, even when compared internationally.
For Stockholm to continue growing sustainably, public transport needs to be expanded. More people need to be able to travel by public transport instead of by private car. Here the City has an important role to play as we are responsible for street design and maintenance.
By optimising street usage, bus journey times can be shortened and made more reliable. Some initiatives are implemented by the City, others by Region Stockholm and SL, which are responsible for traffic planning as well as infrastructure development and maintenance.
