Stockholm is a city that many people choose to live, work or study in. The city's population is increasing, but its urban footprint and road capacity is still the same. If Stockholm is to continue growing sustainably, we need to manage the existing space and ensure that there is room for everyone.
We need to think innovatively, re-evaluate long-standing priorities, look to the future and plan for the Stockholm that emerges. This will enable us to create a sustainable city where everyone has room to breathe and flourish.
The Urban Mobility Strategy provides a roadmap for the city's future development and how we need to prioritise the available space to accommodate a larger population. When you opt to walk, cycle or take public transport, you are creating space for other people and it is easier to reach your destination. Car travel can be reduced by providing viable alternatives for your journey.
We ensure that our streets serve as places, not just transport corridors. They are also the city's urban living rooms and meeting places, where everyone should feel welcome and secure. We manage the spaces between buildings and streets, and see to it that parks, squares and quaysides are places where people choose to spend time and socialise. At the same time, access for deliveries, assisted transport, emergency services and other essential vehicles must always be maintained.
When we create more communal spaces for social interaction, we make Stockholm a more pleasant and secure city to live and work in.
